Courses

We offer a number of different courses in many locations all over Wiltshire which can be booked over the phone or via the website. We hope that the following section will provide information about each of the courses, what content is covered and any additional information such as who and who isn’t suitable for the course.

If you have any questions about any of the courses and their content; please ask any of the course facilitators who run the sessions.

Courses can either be booked over the phone or via our website. All our courses are released for booking 4 weeks before the start date. Our admin team are available weekdays, 9am-5pm and will be happy to assist you in booking on to your chosen course and answer any questions you may have.

CALM: An introduction to Mindfulness

This course introduces a range of techniques for relaxing the body, calming the mind and living more fully in the present moment.  We can often live our lives on “auto-pilot” and react habitually to situations in unhelpful ways.  Mindfulness allows us to be more flexible in our response to the stresses of life, to be less driven and distressed by our thoughts and emotions, and to appreciate each moment of life more fully.

Course aims:

  • The skills of mindfulness, concentration and relaxation
  • Techniques for applying mindfulness to the breath, body, thoughts, feelings and everyday life
  • Practical tips for practicing mindfulness
  • Dealing with difficulties that arise in practicing

This course is suitable for:

  • Anyone with an interest in mindfulness and relaxation
  • Anyone who wants to learn more about ‘living in the moment’

Coping with low mood and depression

This is aimed at people experiencing problems with low mood and depression. Using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, the course aims to guide participants through tools and techniques that are helpful in dealing with this difficult emotion.

Course aims:

  • Help participants to understand low mood and depression and the negative cycles we can get caught up in.
  • How our behaviours can impact on low mood and depression.
  • Teaching “Behavioural Activation”; a well evidenced and NICE recommended intervention for Low mood and Depression.
  • How our thoughts and beliefs can contribute and maintain our low mood.
  • Teach ways of breaking the negative cycles of low mood with a variety of useful techniques
  • Developing self-compassion and acknowledging our positive qualities.
  • How sleep and physical exercise affect our mood and useful tips for improving these.

This course is suitable for:

  • Anyone who wants to address low mood or depression as their main issue.

Living well with chronic pain

Living with chronic pain can be worrying, frustrating and stressful. This course can help you to learn tools and techniques to manage stress, low mood and anxiety and maximise your physical health.

This course is aimed at people with chronic pain and covers:

  • Exploring the challenges of living with chronic pain
  • How anxiety/ low mood can impact us after a diagnosis of a Long Term Condition
  • Helpful ways to reduce stress

Living well with diabetes

This course is for anyone with a diagnosis of Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes who is looking to learn tools and techniques to manage their emotional wellbeing.

It covers:

  • Exploring the challenges of living with diabetes
  • Managing our expectations of ourselves and others
  • Managing difficult thoughts
  • Techniques to manage our worries
  • How anxiety/ low mood can impact us after a diagnosis of diabetes.
  • Setting goals and managing daily activities
  • Helpful ways to reduce stress
  • Useful techniques for effective communication

Managing panic, anxiety and worry

This course is aimed at people experiencing problems with anxiety in any form, including general anxiety, phobias, excessive worry, panic attacks, health anxiety, social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Different parts of the course will be helpful for different types of anxieties.

Course aims:

  • Help participants understand what anxiety is and why we experience it
  • Explain the meaning and cause of the physical symptoms of anxiety
  • Teach ways of managing physical symptoms of anxiety using a range of relaxation, breathing and mindfulness techniques
  • Explain how our thoughts, beliefs and worries can sometimes contribute to anxiety problems
  • Teach ways of managing negative thoughts and worries
  • Explain how avoidance can contribute to anxiety and how we can overcome avoidance
  • Teach “Graded exposure” – a way of overcoming avoidance and anxiety by using a step-by-step approach
  • Discuss the importance of acceptance and tolerance of anxiety and how to manage setbacks and difficulties along the way

This course is suitable for:

  • Generalised anxiety disorder and excessive worry, Phobias, Panic or symptoms of panic, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, health anxiety

This course is not suitable for:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Stress management

Course aims:

  • Use CBT to understand how our thoughts, behaviours, physical sensations and emotions interlink and affect each other
  • Identify potential triggers and causes of stress
  • Introduce techniques to manage our stress levels
  • Understand how our thoughts can impact our stress levels, and how to make our thinking more helpful
  • Managing the expectations we set ourselves and others
  • Learn effective communication techniques
  • Understand how stress can impact our sleep and techniques to manage this
  • Problem solving and putting things into practice

This course is suitable for:

  • Anyone who wants to learn self-help strategies to manage stress
  • Anyone who wants a general understanding of CBT and its application

This course is not suitable for:

  • Anyone who wants to address low mood as their main issue
  • Anyone who wants to address anxiety as their main issue

Wellbeing after baby

This course explores how we can manage our own emotional and mental wellbeing after the birth of a child. A range of topics are covered including stress management and an introduction to anxiety and low mood, as well as exploring useful ways to manage our thoughts and effective communication styles.

Course aims:

  • Normalising and exploring the challenges of motherhood
  • Managing our expectations of ourselves and others
  • Managing difficult thoughts
  • How anxiety and low mood can impact us after having a baby
  • Setting goals and managing daily activities
  • Helpful ways to reduce stress
  • Useful techniques for effective communication

This course is suitable for:

  • Anyone who has had a child in the last 12 months who is interested in learning tools and techniques to manage stress
