How to Avoid Avoidance – techniques to expand your comfort zone

Why do some situations make us so uncomfortable and anxious that we will do almost anything to avoid them? Focusing on avoidance-related anxiety, this workshop will help you to better cope with the things that chip away at our independence.Aimed at people who experience agoraphobia or other specific phobias driven by avoidance – whose world shrinks as they become more dependent on others – the workshop offers practical help on making practical changes towards more positive living.

This free two hour workshop will provide the psychoeducation behind why we have anxiety, explain the fight-or-flight responses involved, as well as explore the role of avoidance and how avoidance can have an impact on our lives. The course will cover how to overcome avoidance with a technique called ‘graded exposure’, by creating a list of feared situations, each of which can then be confronted in stages until the fear itself is overcome.
